Dear Friends,

Thank you for gathering this evening to support the mission of Lazarus Caucus and our work with Baltimore County’s Westside Shelter. As is the case every year, we are so grateful for your support and generosity. This year, however, I want to express a special thanks to all of you for continuing to support us despite this past year’s significant financial challenges. It has been a tough yeat for so many people and we want you to know that we recognize and appreciate your extraordinary dedication. Thank you!

In April 2009, Baltimore County opened a new and much improved shelter facility for the homeless. Able to house 100 men in bunk beds (previously the men slept on floor mats), this new facility boasts a new commercial kitchen, improved bathroom facilities and a resource room. This new space and improved living conditions will make it easier for guests to return to an independent life.

Homelessness is probably not something that comes to your mind every day. It can be easy to think that it is something that only happens in big cities. It happens to people you don’t know. Homelessness is a problem mostly of unemployed, single men. However, the faces of the homeless are young, old, men, women, families, employed, unemployed, white, black, Hispanic… they are military veterans who fought for our country’s freedom. This year I report as past president of Lazarus Caucus. What a blessing and honor it has been for me to work with so many dedicated and giving people. Lazarus Caucus is not simply some charitable organization staffed by part time volunteers. It is a community of loving people, fully committed to making a difference in our world. Dear Supporters of Lazarus,

I am honored to have been elected President of Lazarus Caucus. Exciting things are happening and I am thrilled to be a part of them. Lazarus hopes that a new shelter will be built in 2008. Our dream is that this new facility will also have transitional housing. This is a service needed to ensure that as these men leave the shelter they are prepared to maintain their independent living.
